ATLANTA ¬– Major renovations have begun to preserve affordable senior housing at Lakewood Christian Manor in Atlanta, which will improve the lives of hundreds of seniors by providing them with new amenities and modern updates in their apartments and community spaces. Launching the largest renovation in National Church Residences’ 60-year history, the $37 million project spans 250 apartments and adds free whole-building Wi-Fi as well as a new courtyard community pavilion.

Interior building improvements will include an enhanced entrance lobby, brighter corridors, updated and reconfigured common spaces. Landscaping will be refreshed in connection with the new courtyard pavilion. In addition, all resident units will receive updates, including new kitchen appliances, cabinets, flooring, painted walls and renovated bathrooms.

“I’m proud that National Church Residences is continuing its commitment to the Atlanta area with this extensive renovation of Lakewood Christian Manor,” said Maureen Freehill, director of affordable housing for the Atlanta office of National Church Residences. “We appreciate the assistance of our many partners in making this vision a reality and for supporting our mission to serve all seniors.”

Financial partners for the project include National Equity Fund, Bank of America, Invest Atlanta, Lument/ORIX and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Development partners include Choate Construction and Foley Design of Atlanta.

“Through Lakewood Christian Manor’s housing tax credit award, National Church Residences provides seniors with stability and safety,” said Jill Cromartie, division director of housing finance and development for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “The preservation of this property creates a sense of confidence for our community. Furthermore, DCA is an agency that stands firmly on the principle that all people should live in quality, safe and affordable housing; this renovation allows us to stay true to our values.”

Built in 1972 and partially renovated in 2017, Lakewood Christian Manor is located at 2141 Springdale Road SW. Amenities include a library business center, community room, fitness and wellness centers, arts and crafts room, laundry room, salon/barber shop and fitness center. Apartment rent is subsidized by the Atlanta Housing Authority and by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Renovations are scheduled for completion in the spring of 2023.

National Church Residences operates 12 affordable senior housing communities in metro Atlanta and has been developing and managing affordable senior housing communities in the metro Atlanta market for more than 20 years.
