COLUMBUS, Ohio ¬– On April 1, 2021, National Church Residences will welcome seniors back to their two adult day care centers in Columbus – the Center for Senior Health North at 1700 East Dublin Granville Road and Champion Intergenerational Adult Day Center at 240 North Champion Avenue.

“Our team has worked hard to make this reopening safe for all clients, their loved ones and our staff. We are implementing special safety protocols following or exceeding COVID-19 measures required by the Ohio Department of Health,” said Heather Fleshman, administrator of adult day services.

These protocols include hand-sanitizing stations throughout the centers, use of a commercial surface-sanitizing fogger, initial capacity limited to 30%, health screenings for everyone upon entry into the centers, in addition to weekly COVID-19 testing of all staff and participating clients. Mask wearing and social distancing will be required for clients and staff at both adult day centers.

A grant has made it possible for clients to interact virtually for activities involving art, music, tai chi and relaxation. New iPads will be in place for a virtual book buddies’ program, allowing adults to read to kids virtually since they won’t be able to visit with the children face to face – though we will be continuing our partnership with Columbus Early Learning Center in the other half of the building at Champion. Other enhancements include additional personal protective equipment for clients and staff, plexiglass barriers, plus new technology for social interaction and client therapies.

CSH North will reopen with a primary focus on veterans through its On Point program that was developed in partnership with the Veterans Administration in 2019. On Point combats isolation and offers veterans a place where they can socialize while participating in daily activities, games, Bible study and much more. Clients also will have next-door access to comprehensive health care at COPC Senior Select, which will provide more resources and support for clients at this location.

Kyle Seymour, veteran sales coordinator for the Centers for Senior Health, has seen the benefits of the adult day environment for the clients he serves as well as for his own family. Seymour’s father spent three days a week at CSH North during the last year of his life, enjoying social time and exercise with fellow veterans, as well as time to relax in a safe, comfortable place that addressed special dementia-related needs. “As good as it was for my father, it was real peace of mind for my mother. She knew he was in great hands and she was able to get out and do things without worrying,” noted Seymour.

Ongoing services at both centers include an onsite nurse, socialization activities, access to social workers, a nutritious, light breakfast, lunch as well as a snack, plus transportation for those who qualify.
