National Church Residences Celebrates the Grand Reopening of Carnegie Tower at Fairfax

CLEVELAND – National Church Residences hosted a ribbon-cutting for the grand reopening of the Carnegie Tower at Fairfax, celebrating a $13 million renovation of this community for low-income seniors age 62 and over.
Carnegie Tower at Fairfax (formerly known as Antioch Tower) is a 171-unit apartment complex for independent living, featuring a mix of one- and two-bedroom floor plans. The beautiful 12-story high-rise features amenities including a community room, kitchen, multi-purpose room and on-site laundry.

“Residents at Carnegie Tower are fortunate for having this affordable housing community preserved for the long term,” noted Pamela Ashby, field office director, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. “Currently, Cleveland has about 10,000 multi-family, affordable housing units and many of them have long wait lists.”

Renovations were made possible by funding partners the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development, the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, KeyBank, the State of Ohio HOME program, the National Housing Trust Fund and the US Treasury Departments Community Development Financial Institutions’ Capital Magnet Fund. Berardi Partners served as the architects for this development and Cleveland-based, John G. Johnson provided construction services.

“When we purchased this property, in 2013, our intention was to extend this affordable senior housing community’s useful life. Many partners have joined us in making this intention a reality,” said Mark Ricketts, president and CEO of National Church Residences. “Thank you to all our partners, who joined with National Church Residences to improve and preserve this community that has graced this neighborhood for more than 45 years.”

Located near the Cleveland Clinic main campus, the community was originally constructed in 1976 through a partnership between the Cleveland Clinic, University Circle Inc., and the Antioch Baptist Church to create affordable housing for seniors and revitalize the Fairfax neighborhood. National Church Residences purchased the property in 2013 and just completed renovations that included a refresh of all public spaces, modernized elevators, updated mechanical systems, new lighting and energy efficient windows.
